Grenadier-Regiment 266 was part of the 72 Infantry Division, which was lightly engaged in France, it took part in the campaign in the Balkans in the spring of 1941.It then crossed into Russia as part of Army Group Sud. It fought in the Crimean campaign and the subsequent Siege of Sevastopal, before being transferred to Army Group Mitte. In the centre sector it took part in the winter fighting of 1943/43, in the Rzhev withdrawal, and the battle of Kursk. Transferred back to the southern sector, it fought in the Dnieper bend battles in southern Ukraine and was finally encircled at Tscherkassy with the IX Armeekorp. During the battle and eventual breakout attempt, General Stemmermann, the Korp Commanding Offficer personally assumed command of the division. When he was killed by an anti-tank shell, all order disappeared in the 72nd. Only half of the division escaped the encirclement. Reformed in the spring 1944, it was in Poland in the summer and was officially cited for it performance in the Vistula defensive battles in August. The 72nd suffered heavy losses in southern Poland. The division was transferred to PVII Panzer Krop part of Armeegruppe Mitte, which surrendered to the Red Army in Czechoslovakia.

Soldbuch. Fallschirm-Flak-Regiment Hermann Göring. Unteroffizier Hans Korell.

1). Soldbuch (replacement issue) with uniform photo, dated 06/02/1944.
Entitled to:-
Medaille "Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42" (Ostmedaille).
Hans was serving with Fallschirm-Flak-Regiment Hermann Göring .12 Battrie in Russia. It would be reasonable to assume that Hans had moved with the division when it was withdrawn from Italy and Sicily. Hans was hospitalized on 24/11/1944 suffering from an eye ailment. On 03/03/1945 Hans was wounded by hand grenade and subsequently died in hospital on 10/03/1945.
The massive Soviet Vistula-Oder Offensive trapped the Hermann Göring Panzerkorps in the Heiligenbeil Pocket along with the rest of the 4.Armee. In February, the Heer's élite Panzergrenadier-Division Großdeutschland was attached to the corps.
Despite several breakout attempts, the Panzerkorps had to be evacuated by sea to Swinemünde in Pomerania. Upon landing, it was thrown back into combat, defending the Oder-Neisse line against Soviet attacks through mid-March. To bolster the Korps' strength, the elite Panzergrenadier-Division Brandenburg was attached to the unit.
On 03/03/1945 when Hans was engaged in this defensive action, he was wounded by hand grenade and subsequently died in hospital on 10/03/1945.
