Nachrichten-Abteilung 253 was part of the 253 Infantry Division. It first saw action in France in 1940 and remained there until the spring of 1941, when it is transferred to Poland. It crossed into Russia in June 1941 and took part in the drive on Moscow. It was in combat throughout the Winter offensive of 1941/42, during which it was surrounded south of Lake Volge in January. Breaking out with heavy casualties, the division fought on the central sector of the Eastern Front from June 1941 until May 1945 and involved in all the major battles of the 9th Army except Kursk, when it was in the 4th Army reserve. It took part in the defeat of the Russian autumn offensive of 1943, the Dnieper withdrawal, and retreat through the northern Ukraine and Poland. The division ended the war surrounded in a pocket east of Prague.
A very nice small citation group which includes the rare and hard to find unbroken service award.
